French E-twinning project

Technology: Bringing the South of France to the West of Ireland at St. Brendan's College, Belmullet

PREPARATIONS FOR LANGUAGE EXCHANGE

Recently two teachers from St Brendan’s College were hosted by a school in the Ardeche in the South of France, called Le Portalet Notre-Dame. Visit http://
collegeportaletanglais-europeen.blogspot.com

Teachers from the two schools worked together for four days in four main areas:

  • Preparation for a 2 year language exchange which will commence with incoming 1 years in September
  • Planning for the E-twinning project that has commenced this year. Visit www.etwinning.net
  • Planning for the study visit that a group of 5 years will make to le Portalet Notre-Dame this academic year
  • Sharing teaching ideas and practices in foreign language teaching.

This year E-twinning is in its first year and it is directed mainly at 5 years. Next year however, a 2 year exchange programme will commence with incoming 1 years which will involve (among other things):

  • Exchange visits
  • A joint art exhibition
  • Joint cultural exhibitions
  • Students will make short recordings.

The e-twinning portal will be used as a medium for the students from 1 year upwards to display and share their work.

The aim of the 2 year exchange programme is to:

  • Develop the students competence in their target language (French)
  • Allow the students to express and celebrate their own culture
  • Give the students a sense of their place in Europe
  • Equip the students skills to learn independently
  • Increase the student’s digital competence in today’s word of information technology.

Ms Egan and Ms Carolan were warmly welcomed by our new partner school by students and staff alike. While they were there, they visited classes and took part in team teaching while they were there.

Le Portalet Notre-Dame is in Largentière, a very picturesque small town in the Department of Ardeche, with medieval cobbled streets and historic buildings including a magnificent castle. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside of rivers and mountains.
