Engineering
This is a follow on from the Junior Certificate, Metalwork course. It consists of a more scientific in depth study of metals and other materials used in engineering throughout the world. The course covers the classification of metals, plastics, ceramics and other materials. The theory also includes the study of metrology, metallurgy, methods of manufacture, metal cutting and the heat treatment of metals and corrosion.
Other study covers the analysis of equilibrium diagrams, machine design and operation, welding and the testing of materials. The course also has a built in modules on electronics, CNC machining and pneumatics and a special topic for study in the final exam each year. The final exam includes a project, a practical test and a three-hour theory paper. Many of our students who have taken this subject together with Science and Technical Graphics have gone on to secure some of the top jobs in the new technological industries in Ireland .
Engineering Room
Our Metalwork/Engineering is one of the most modern and best equipped in the country. Over the years we have made a huge investment in developing facilities which consist of the following:
In the Engineering Room Computers are used for C.A.M. (Computer Aided Manufacture). This means that the computers control and operate C.N.C. precision lathes. Operations of high quality and intricacy are carried out in accordance with the students programming. This is in keeping with the most modern manufacturing technology.
