Higher Education Access Route

What is the Higher Education Route (HEAR)?

HEAR is a 3rd level admissions scheme for Students who have the ability to succeed in Third Level, but who for a variety of social and economic reasons may be prevented from doing so.

Eligible applicants may compete for a quota of places allocated on a reduced points basis in each of the participating institutions.

Eligible applicants may benefit from additional Post Entry Supports in the participating institutions.

Who should apply?

  • Do you have a Medical Card / GP Visit card?
  • Do your parents'/guardians' receive a means-tested social welfare payment?
  • Based on the household income do you expect to be eligible for the Higher Education Grant from your local authority or VEC?
  • Where do you go to school (DEIS school)?
  • Where do you live?
  • What is your parents/guardians jobs/employment status?
