St. Brendan's College

Junior Science is offered to all students as one of their compulsory subjects. It introduces the three subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students gain practical laboratory experience doing their mandatory experiments and their compulsory practical projects. This lays the foundation for entry into Senior cycle where they may choose the following subjects to Leaving Cert Level. Biology, Chemistry, Physics/Chemistry, Agricultural Science.

Biology

This course covers detailed study of both plant and animal life and includes compulsory practical investigations. This subject is essential for a wide range of careers including Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Veterinary, Medicine, All Science Courses, Beauty Therapy etc.

Agricultural Science

This is the study of crops and domestic animals. It also involves practical work and study of farming techniques, including a farm visit. This subject is useful for careers in farming, agricultural science, horticulture etc.

Physics and Chemistry

This hybrid subject is composed of basic principles of both physics and chemistry. Topics studied include mechanics, light, energy, electricity, atomic theory, electrochemistry, thermochemistry and inorganic chemistry. A flair for mathematics is an advantage as physics involves many calculations. It provides a good foundation for courses leading to careers in science related fields such as Engineering, Quality Surveyor, Materials and Engineering Technology, Materials and Construction Technology, Electrician etc.
